You need to set up networking tcp/ip client machines and configure Samba on the Linux server. Don’t try using DOS clients, some versions of Samba work with DOS clients others don’t.
Linux supports a variety of networking protocols, but you’ll want to go with TCP/IP in the first instance.
Using virtually any Linux distribution you’ll be all set up out of the box for a small LAN, assuming you have an internet router providing DHCP information. Plug in, turn on – job done!
If you’re not connecting out to the internet, then you have the choice of setting up one Linux box as a server running DHCP or using static addresses. With 3 PCs you may find static addresses easier.
Use any of the private address ranges as specified in RFC1918 – http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1918.txt
Once you’ve got the basic networking up and running, you may want to look at setting up iptables rules and whatnot.
Use an ethernet switch – if ur networking by cat5, what version of linux are you using? it would help us to answer
It is easy but not easy to write here. Follow a good book, you will learn easily. You can contact a person who knows the Unix very well.
