What is Linux?
Linux is an operating system created by Linus Torvalds in his student days at the University of Helsinki. Linux was created and intended for use as an option or replace the operating system to be used by other computer users, such as MS-DOS, Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, etc. is not a program or set of programs like a word processor of an office suite.
A Brief History
While studying at the University of Helsinki, Linus uses a version of UNIX operating system called ‘Minix’. numerous requests for changes and improvements to the operating system were posted by other users and Andrew Tanenbaum and Linus, the creator of Minix, but he felt were not necessary. So Linus decided to create his own operating system, one that takes into account user feedback and suggested improvements.
A core is the focal point of any operating system. Without going into details, the kernel tells the CPU to do what you want the program or application that is used to make. An operating system would not exist without a nucleus. Without But the kernel is useless without any programs or applications.
In 1991, two critical situations evolved that would serve as a starting point for Linux. A kernel was already created by Linus, but had no programs to use, some programs are available on GNU and Richard Stallman, but had no working kernel. So Linux was born from a combination of GNU by Richard and Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the nuclei of Linus in Helsinki, Finland. It’s been a long way to go and travel and so far the Internet has become the main method of obtaining the Linus kernel with GNU programs. You can almost say that Linux is an operating system that came to life on the Internet.
Not for everyone at first
Other software companies sell software on a CD or a set of diskettes, along with an instruction manual, quick, and in half an ‘hour or even less probable, could install a fully functional operating system on your computer. Just read and follow the installation instructions. This was what the company had in mind when they developed their operating system. However, when Linux was developed by Linus, this factor was not considered initially. Later, Red Hat and other related companies made their goal of developing Linux to be easily installed like any other operating system on the market, anyone can follow simple instructions, and today we can say with certainty that successfully completed this particular purpose.
Linux Today
Today, there are a lot of favorable reactions from computer users about Linux. The fact that Linux has proven to be very stable and versatile, especially as a network server, surely played an important role in its popularity. Down-time is minor or insignificant when Linux is installed and used as Web servers or enterprise networks. Many cases have been reported in Linux-based servers have worked without problems for over a year without rebooting, and when he had to be demolished, it was only for a short period for maintenance. Its profitability has become one of its strongest points of sale. Linux can be installed and run on a PC or a network server without having to spend as much as you would for other software packages. Increased reliability and lower cost – is ideal.
